Windows 7 on 512MB… Ed Bott says all good

Ed Bott, the award-winning technology writer, shares an important insight on Windows 7 performance vis-a-vis Windows XP and Windows Vista over at his blog at ZDNet.

The x64 edition of Windows 7 Ultimate running on just over 200MB of RAM? That was a pleasant surprise. I was also surprised to see that this clean install was using less than 9 GB of disk space in this VM.

With identical configurations, Windows 7 was dramatically faster at starting up and shutting down than Vista, and some routine tasks that would grind the Vista machine to a halt completed without incident on the Windows 7 machine.

Windows 7 SKUs announced

The Windows team has just announced the SKU line-up for Windows 7. In the line-up, each SKU is a superset of the previous SKU, unlike with Windows Vista. This means that each higher edition SKU will have every feature lower edition SKUs have. The SKU lineup for Windows 7 is:
