Windows 7 UX Guidelines

Microsoft Surface

The latest revision of Microsoft’s Windows User Experience Interaction Guidelines, or the Windows UX guidelines, published June 30 includes updates to many articles to include UX changes and improvements in Windows 7.

"Everything is best for something and worst for something else.
The trick is knowing for what, when, for whom, and why." —Bill Buxton

Though much of the Windows 7 enhancements over Windows Vista have been in the plumbing and in the feature enhancements, there have been powerful improvements in taskbar, jumplists, overlays, progress bars, thumbnail toolbars, etc. that needs appropriate adherence to the guidelines for a better user experience. The guidelines helps establish a high quality and consistency baseline for all Windows-based applications.

The guide is also available for download in PDF format. If you have specific questions, comments, or requests, you can contact the team at winui@microsoft.com.

Windows 7 RTM’d

Windows 7 has officially released to manufacturing (RTM)! Build 7600 has been signed off as RTM.

The final few minutes before RTM are a sign-off process where each and every team that contributed to Windows formally commits to having successfully executed the work necessary for the product to be in the release process. We gather one last time (for Windows 7) in the “Ship Room” and a representative from each team signs (literally) and signifies their team’s readiness for manufacturing. We thought we’d share this moment with you here today.
